Validation of artificial intelligence software in radiology: Project AIR

Bram van Ginneken

Team members:

Over 200 commercial artificial intelligence (AI) products are available for radiology. However, it is not easy to test or compare products. Previously we developed an open-source framework for comparing the performance of similar AI products in radiology on a secret benchmark dataset (Project AIR). However, AI software is not static (algorithms get updated and new products are launched) and AI does not necessarily work on all patient populations (generalizability of AI). With Project AIRborne, we develop an infrastructure enabling continuous testing of these products on different populations. Results are published on a Grand-Challenge.org leaderboard and AIforRadiology.com.

AwakeRodent: the awake rodent whole-brain imaging multi-center study

Joanes Grandjean

Team members:

  • M.M. Chakravarty (McGill University, Montreal, Canada),
  • M. Aswendt (University of Cologne, Germany),
  • O. Esteban (Lausanne University Hospital and University of Lausanne, Switzerland)

Animal research direly needs an open science revolution! Traditional barriers for sharing data (i.e. privacy
concerns) do not apply to data collected in animals. Still, the open science mindset hasn’t permeated the animal research community. We are actively changing this. To open up animal research, we will aggregate and curate datasets from multiple animal imaging centers worldwide, and distribute open software for preprocessing. To enable laboratories to engage in open science practices, we will organize workshops to transfer technical know-how to our research community. By leading by example, we hope to inspire the next generation of animal researchers.
