650.000 euro for development of structural health monitoring of people with intellectual disabilities

The Ministry of Health Welfare and Sport has made 650.000 euro available for ‘Sterker op eigen benen’ to develop a structural health monitoring system of people with intellectual disabilities (ID). The monitoring system will be used to get insight into health questions and demand for care of this vulnerable group.

Problems in healthcare

People with ID have more health problems than the general population. Due to transition in the Dutch healthcare system, people with ID need to search more actively for support.  In addition, fragmentation of care has resulted in a lack of insight in the healthcare chain. Questions arising among healthcare professionals: “Which support are they looking for?” “What is their demand for care?” and “What are the effects of the healthcare transition? “. 

Time for action

The subsidy from the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport enables the development of a  structural health monitoring of people with ID in the healthcare chain. When the monitoring is developed, it can be used in research to provide evidence-based knowledge on the healthcare of people with ID. Thereby we can contribute to education for clinicians, guideline development  and most importantly the optimisation of the healthcare chain.

Who will carry out the project?

The project will be executed by Sterker op eigen benen, a collaboration between care organisations for people with ID and the Radboudumc (Department of Primary Care and its chair Healthcare for people with ID, led by associate professor Geraline Leusink). These care organisations are: Siza, Dichterbij, Pluryn, Oro, ’s Heerenloo zorggroep, Driestroom, Koraalgroep, Philadelphia and Twentse zorgcentra. Also, the municipality of Nijmegen, GGD Gelderland Zuid, Erasmus MC and Wageningen University are involved in the development. Together they aim to improve care for people with ID.
