Peter Friedl, theme Cancer development and immune defense and Eleonora Dondossola from MD Anderson Cancer Center joint-team apply intravital microscopy to visualize the foreign body response to implanted biomaterials in small animals.

They show that neoangiogenesis drives chronic inflammation and scarring which was reverted by anti-angiogenesis therapy and macrophage depletion.
