Ambition and impact

We provide basic and academic general pediatric care in particular for patients referred by pediatricians.

There is a close cooperation between the different departments involved in the care and research of the sick child. The Amalia Children's Hospital in Nijmegen is one of the eight academic children's hospitals in the Netherlands.

Cellular bioenergetics

Werner Koopman's research group focuses on understanding cellular energy metabolism in the context of the mitochondrial (dys)function at multiple levels (organisms, tissues, cells, proteins, molecules), with the aim to develop intervention strategies.

Mitochondrial molecular medicine

Ulrich Brandt's research group studies mitochondrial biochemistry, bridging classical bioenergetics and the central role of mitochondria in apoptosis, degenerative disorders and aging.

Molecular therapies for neurometabolic and retinal diseases

Alex Garanto's research group focuses on developing RNA-based therapies and personalized human models for rare neuro(sensory)metabolic diseases, with an emphasis on brain and retina-related conditions to evaluate these therapeutic strategies.
