Research News New insights for patient-centered cardiac rehabilitation

Researcher Niek Koenders (Radboudumc) and colleagues have reassessed the needs of people undergoing cardiac rehabilitation. Based on an analysis of 94 studies with data from more than 1,700 patients, 185 relatives, and 105 healthcare professionals, five core needs were identified: safety without overprotection, support from relatives, contact with fellow patients, personalized care, and a new outlook on the future. These findings show how important it is to look beyond medical treatment alone and to really pay attention to the person behind the patient.

Specific recommendations for practic

The results have been incorporated into the revised KNGF guideline on cardiac rehabilitation (module C.2). This provides physical therapists with practical tools to better tailor exercise programs, create a safe and motivating environment, actively involve family and fellow patients, and support patients in setting and monitoring personal goals. Thanks to this revision, cardiac rehabilitation is now even better aligned with what patients need to persevere and successfully complete their treatment.
