Peter-Bram ’t Hoen has been appointed professor of Bioinformatics at Radboud University/Radboud university medical center with effect from 1 February 2018

Professor 't Hoen is an expert in the analysis of large molecular datasets. He discovers patterns that are crucial for making a diagnosis, predicting the course of a disease or the effectiveness of a treatment (personalised medicine). His more fundamental interest lies in determining the effect of variants in the DNA on the sequence and structure of RNA and proteins, to explain differences between humans.

Peter-Bram 't Hoen (1975) graduated cum laude in 1997 with a Master of Science in Biochemistry and Pharmacochemistry at VU University Amsterdam. In 2002, he obtained his PhD at Leiden University for research into the differences between people in the proteins that break down medicines and thus influence the effectiveness and toxicity of medicines.

At that time, it was still too early to translate this information into a customised prescription for the patient (personalised medicine), but now there is sufficient knowledge to put this into practice, something which Peter-Bram 't Hoen wants to start using at Radboud university medical center.

From 2002 until his appointment in Nijmegen, Peter-Bram 't Hoen worked at Leiden University Medical Center, initially as a postdoctoral researcher and assistant professor at the Department of Human Genetics and, from 2011, as an associate professor and leader of the Bioinformatics research group.

Professor ‘t Hoen will lead the Centre for Molecular and Biomolecular Informatics (CMBI) at Radboud university medical center. He is also a member of the Executive Management Committee of RD-Connect, a European infrastructure for bringing together data from patients with rare diseases. He is also one of the coordinators of the Personal Health Train, an international initiative for facilitating the exchange of health data.
