Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of liver and pancreatic tumors has been shown to be feasible and safe, but temperature feedback during the ablation procedure is currently lacking. Therefore, intraprocedural assessment of treatment efficacy is limited. Intraoperative MR imaging of RFA therapy could allow real-time monitoring of the ablation process and enable delineation of the true ablation zone during RFA therapy.

Aims

Our research groups aims to assess the feasibility of real-time MRI temperature monitoring and ablation zone assessment during RFA of liver and pancreatic tumors.

Discoveries

First preclinical tests is showing feasibility of RFA application in ex-vivo tissue with simultaneous MR thermometry imaging.

Research within MITeC

Both preclinical tests, as well as a first pilot study in patients (planned in the second half of 2018) will take place on the MITeC OR9 and MRI.
