What is mass spectrometry?

Mass spectrometry is a powerful analytical technique that measures the mass of ionized molecules for identification and quantization in simple and complex mixtures.

A mass spectrometer generates multiple ions from the sample, it then separates them according to their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) and then records the relative abundance of each ion type. In biomedical applications, mass spectrometry is often combined with separation techniques such as liquid or gas chromatography and applied to study small molecules such as metabolites and drugs, but also larger biomolecules such as proteins and glycans.
