Goals

  • To investigate the effect of primary and secondary prevention on incident (cerebro)vascular disease and dementia. 
  • To investigate inflammation in subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral hemorrhage and cerebral small vessel disease (SVD), the causes of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) and the role of atrial fibrillation in ischemic stroke. 
  • To improve the acute treatment of stroke, prevent incident vascular disease by innovative treatment approaches (or their withdrawal) and develop and implement novel (home-based) personalized rehabilitation strategies.

Research groups contributing to this research program

Dementia, with a focus on prevention

Edo Richard's research group focuses on dementia, with three focuses: prevention, mostly from a population perspective; diagnostics, mostly focusing on timely diagnosis; and ethical aspects of early diagnostics and prevention.

Motor control and rehabilitation

Vivian Weerdesteyn's research group aims to elucidate the mechanistic underpinnings of impaired balance and gait in people with neurological conditions, and to develop novel interventions to ameliorate these problems.

Neurological gait impairments

Jorik Nonnekes's research group focus on neurological gait impairments. The aim to improve the quality of life of affected individuals is the drive behind their work.
