About the Radboudumc center of expertise

At the Radboudumc, we have had a multi-disciplinary Facial Team for more than 20 years, treating and assisting patients with facial paralysis of various causes. This is teamwork, ranging from mime therapy and botulinum toxin for synkinesis, to surgery of the face. We offer the whole range of surgeries: from static corrections (lifting effect without movement of the eyebrow and corner of the mouth; gold weights to aggravate the upper eyelid) to dynamic corrections (where movement is restored, on the one hand via a chewing movement or “chewing smile”, but also spontaneously).

We conduct research into the impact of facial paralysis on the functioning and general well-being of patients. We are also active in researching which of the surgical techniques brings back the most beautiful smile, or dynamic surgery research.

The Radboudumc Center of Expertise for Facial Paralysis has been recognized by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport since 2018.
