Dick Stegeman was appointed by His Majesty as Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion, a highly prestigious decoration.

Dick Stegeman is a defining figure in Dutch and international clinical neurophysiology and his scientific work has had an enormous impact worldwide. His discovery of the “EMG mat”, which can be used on the skin to examine diseased muscles and nerves, has ushered in a true revolution for the way in which doctors look at measurements of muscle activity. An electromyogram or EMG examination measures the electrical activity of your muscles and/or the activity of the nerve that triggers this muscle. Even more importantly, due to the much more precise measurements that this invention has made possible, the treatment of people with neurological diseases has undeniably improved. The combination of fundamental research at a top level with a direct connection to daily clinical practice means that Prof. Stegeman’s work really captures the imagination.
