Next week more than 100 participants from 25 countries will visit the 2nd HBM4EU Training School of the joint human biomonitoring (HBM) effort of the European Commission.

Paul Scheepers from the Department for Health Evidence coordinates all HBM4EU training. He is also a member of the ethics board and he coordinates the Dutch contribution to the European chromium study.

HBM4EU is a joint human biomonitoring (HBM) effort of the European Commission, the European Environment Agency and 24 EU member states, countries associated to the EU (Iceland, Norway and Switzerland) and Israel. HBM4EU is co-funded asan European Joint Programme under Horizon 2020. It runs for five years, from 2017 to 2021 and involves a budget of 74 M€. Existing HBM procedures for ethics and data protection will be harmonized under the new GDPR. So far data on 194 existing HBM studies (cross sectional, case-control and cohort designs) have been identified. This data will be linked to aggregate external exposure and the relevant exposure pathways.

For some priority substances data will be generated in new studies that are being set up. Novel methods will be developed to identify human internal exposure to chemicals and establish the causal link with health effects. An example of such a is a study on occupational exposure to chromium that will be carried out in 2019 in eight countries, including the Netherlands. Biomarkers of exposure to chromium in blood plasma and erythrocytes will be compared to urine chromium and a new method based on determination of hexavalent chromium in exhaled breath condensate.

Existing and new HBM data will be made available in the IPCHEM database that is provided by the Joint Research Center. Using this information infrastructure, policy-makers and the general population will be provided with science-based knowledge on the health risks associated with exposure to chemicals. Chemical risk assessment in the EU will be improved through the effective use of HBM data. More information can be found on www.hbm4eu.eu. You can also watch a HBM4EU video or read the newsletter.
