During the last meeting of COREON (November 2016) Evert-Ben van Veen (legal advisor COREON) gave an update of “Toetsing van nWMO-plichtig onderzoek” (1T – www.eenvormigetoetsing.nl/).

1T is a initiative of COREON (working Group: TNO, Lifelines, PSI BBMRI, NIVEL, METC) to come to a framework for the review of all scientific research that is outside the scope of the Medical Research Act (WMO). The main goals of this initiative are 1) achieving a clear framework with associated criteria for the Netherlands and 2) prevention of research waste.

The first aim of 1T is to obtain a signed agreement by all UMC’s for all research that is related to the Parelsnoer Institute (www.parelsnoer.nl) in February 2017. In addition, 1T is working on an electronic tool that contains all review criteria. This tool will be open source software and can be used by all organizations which review scientific research that is outside the scope of the Medical Research Act. The β version of this tool should be available in February 2017. There is a grant application submitted to VWS for the further development of the tool.

During the next Epidemiology Conference (WEON – 8/9 Juni, Antwerp) the topic of the COREON session will be “Toetsing van nWMO-plichtig onderzoek” (1T).

Note: There is also an initiative by the NFU (working group: NVMETC, STZ, Nefarma, NFU and ACRON) which is focusing on pharmaceutical research initiated or funded by the pharmaceutical industry that is outside the scope of the Medical Research Act (WMO – http://nwmostudies.nl). There is alignment  between the two projects.
