What to do

If the contrast solution has leaked out of your vein, the radiologist will first assess the severity of the leak and discuss what to do next. We will also make a note of who you spoke to.

COMPRESS

  • The strikethrough text does not apply to your situation: 
    • Place cold, damp compresses (facecloths or towels) on the swollen area for the first 24 hours
    • Place warm compresses (facecloths or towels) on the swollen area

ELEVATE ARM

Try to keep your arm elevated as much as possible (e.g. by placing a pillow under it while you sit). 

PAIN MEDICATION

You can take paracetamol for the pain.

About the procedure

There is a very small chance (less than 1%) of the contrast fluid leaking out of the vein. If this leads to swelling, a numb feeling or pain, you can contact the Department of Radiology.

Contacting the department

In some cases, you may need to contact the Department of Radiology. If you notice any of the following symptoms, please contact the Radiology Helpdesk:
  • skin discolouration (darker areas)
  • worsening pain or numbness
  • reduced ability to move the arm
Call (024) 361 45 29. The Helpdesk will connect you to a doctor at the Department of Radiology. Outside office hours, call (024) 361 41 83 and ask for the on-duty radiologist. In both cases, mention that you are experiencing symptoms caused by leaking contrast fluid following a CT scan. You may be asked to come to the hospital for treatment. If you return outside office hours, make clear arrangements in advance on where to go and whom to report to.
