Open Science and open access
Open science is the practice of science in such a way that others can collaborate and contribute, where research data, lab notes and other research processes are freely available, under terms that enable reuse, redistribution and reproduction of the research and its underlying data and methods.

Open Science
What is Open Science?
Open Science stands for the transition to a new, more open and participatory way of conducting, publishing and evaluating scholarly research. Central to this concept is the goal of increasing cooperation and transparency in all research stages. This is achieved, among other ways, by sharing research data, publications, software, tools and results as early and open as possible. More information
Three main topics are identified in this transition:
- Open Access
- FAIR data
- Citizen Science
Radboudumc endorses the principles of Open Science.
Open Access publishing
What is open access?
Open Access is an important part of Open Science. Open Access of publications provides direct, free and online access to scientific publications without copyright restrictions of publishers. Open Access significantly increases the visibility of a publication. More information
Radboudumc endorses the principles of Open Access and monitors the percentage of articles that are published Open Access.
How to publish Open Access?
The Radboud University Library supports Radboudumc researchers in publishing their research articles Open Access, including excellent financial deals with scientific journals and making the publication available free of charge via the Radboud Repository. Check the Radboud University Library website for all available support.
FAIR data management
What is FAIR?
The FAIR data principles are a set of principles that enable reuse of data by humans, and by machines. Data should be made Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. All Radboud University and Radboudumc researchers are obliged to have all research data comply at least with the F (sustainably findable) and the A (proper access management) of the FAIR guidelines. More information
Furthermore, according to the RU doctorate regulations, all PhD candidates should include a description of the research data management in their PhD thesis. The doctorate regulations also indicate that the research data of the PhD thesis should be made available to the manuscript committee, cum laude committee (if applicable) and doctoral Examination Board when requested.
How to make your data FA(IR)?
The Radboud Technology Center Data Stewardship supports researchers in the complete research data lifecycle in order to make data FAIR. This includes the Planning & Design phase, with support to make a data management plan (DMP), the Collect & Create phase, providing guidance about data sources and recommended data collection tools, the Store & Analyze phase, supporting safe and shareable data access and analysis, and the Archive & Share phase, including publishing and archiving the data after publication of the results. A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) data management scientific research indicates the requirements for each type of research project.
Citizen Science
What is Citizen Science?
Citizen Science is the collection and analysis of data relating to the natural world by members of the general public, typically as part of a collaborative project with professional scientists.
Radboudumc and Radboud University endorse the principles of Citizen Science.
How to ‘do’ Citizen Science?
Radboudumc already has many examples of Citizen Science. Together with Radboud University, a tool set is being developed to support researchers in setting up citizen science projects. A link to this information will follow shortly.
