We focus on infectious diseases, oncology and pediatrics/obstetrics, with the goal of developing optimal, personalized pharmacotherapy.
The research of the department is inspired by healthcare challenges both within our own center and worldwide, and research findings are often translated back into patient care.
Furthermore three research domains can be distinguished: preclinical research, clinical research and implementation research. The intention is that our research groups in the fields of infectious diseases, oncology, and pediatrics/obstetrics integrate these three domains in their research.
The research groups are supported by two laboratories within the department: the Laboratory of Molecular Pharmacology and Toxicology and the Laboratory of Clinical Pharmacology/Pharmacokinetics. Support with respect to advanced modelling techniques is provided by a pharmacometrics group. As a consequence of the research portfolio, researchers within the department apply a wide array of methods and techniques.

The Ussing Chamber experiment is a unique ex vivo way of investigating the passage of compounds through the intestine. By using fresh human intestine tissue and several vitality parameters we can come as close as possible to the real situation in our body.

We offer state of the art approaches, techniques and expertise to study pharmacological mechanisms driving the clinical pharmacology and toxicology of drugs.
One such approach is the ex vivo placenta perfusion technique, which we use to study the handling of drugs by the human placenta.
