4 March 2019
The kick-off of the project was on February 26th, and 150 children (aged 10 – 12 years old) visited the Medical Faculty of the Radboudumc. The children and teachers were introduced to the field of sports cardiology and exercise sciences by Thijs and his colleagues. After an interactive lecture in the Auditorium, everyone was invited to participate in 4 practical work sessions. First, Esmée Bakker explained how to measure heart rate, and challenged them to exercise in different heart rate zones. Second, Vincent Aengevaeren taught them how to use a stethoscope and echocardiography to assess heart health. Third, Thijs Landman introduced the concept of electrocardiography and why this can be used for cardiac screening. Fourth, Bram van Bakel guided everyone through the Anatomical Museum to create awareness about cardiac anatomy and how exercise may impact this.
During the upcoming 6 weeks, each class will discuss the effects of exercise on the heart in several assignments. Subsequently, the children will design, conduct and analyze their own research project in small subgroups. Given the enthusiasm of the children and teachers, it may be possible that some of them will join our team at the Department of Physiology in a decade or so.
