I’m a new PhD student at the Department of Physiology, where I did my Masters internship. My work will explore regulation of blood flow within the brain, and how changes in brain perfusion impact cognitive function. While we know that Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are linked to lowered brain perfusion, it’s not clear whether vascular or cognitive dysfunction comes first – and that’s what I’d like to figure out!
Could you describe yourself in a few words?
Outdoorsy, friendly, traveler, independent.
What do you normally do in the weekends?
I like to get outside as much as possible! So on the weekend you can find me hiking or biking, out for a short trip to a nearby city, or just running errands around town. In the evenings I like to relax with friends both near and far (through Skype), or curl up with some Netflix.
What are your hobbies and can you tell us something about your favorite one?
I’m a big fan of hiking and camping, my favorite trip so far was a week of backpacking through Yosemite National Park in California a few years ago. While the mountains were challenging to navigate with a full backpack, the views from the top were fantastic and it was nice to cool down with some snow. On that trip I also narrowly avoided stepping on a rattlesnake, so I count myself lucky in many ways.
Could you describe your best holiday?
My favorite holiday was a month of travel with one of my closest friends just this past summer (2018) after I finished my Masters degree. We met up in Sydney just in time for the Vivid lights festival, and then we flew to New Zealand where we spent a couple weeks driving through the North and South islands. Some of our other stops were Tokyo and Kyoto, Dublin, and beautiful lake-filled Finland.
What is your dream for the future?
Professionally, I’d like to be in a place where I can keep working with interesting people, doing research on topics that excite me, and hopefully push the field forward in some way! Ideally, I would balance this with some clinical work as well. Personally, I want to keep traveling and spending quality time with my friends and family, and I’d love to hike the Pacific Crest Trail someday.

This picture is taken at Roys Peak, just off of Lake Wanaka in New Zealand in June 2018. The summit is 1578 m, and it was a tough hike in slippery snow towards the top. The platform at the top is just a couple meters across and was full of happy hikers enjoying a break and the gorgeous views.

In the monthly 'Employee's Personal Touch' an employee answers a few questions about the work, all with a personal touch. Now Daria Shkredova tells us her story.
