Why Nijmegen

Nijmegen rarely makes international headlines, which is precisely what the BBC found remarkable. In a 2023 feature, the BBC described Nijmegen as “the progressive city that few know”, highlighting the Netherlands' oldest city as a place that has quietly built a reputation for sustainability, livability and forward-thinking urban policy.

  • Location: A compact, walkable, bike-friendly city on the river Waal, close to the German border.
  • Practicalities: Lower cost of living than Amsterdam or Utrecht, with excellent international schools and a large student and expat population.
  • Academic community: Home to Radboud University, Radboudumc, and the Max-Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, giving the city an unusually high density of international academics for its size.
