Research Human performance Areas of expertise

The Human Performance Lab consists of researchers and medical doctors who are widely spread across various medical departments of the medical hospital. Each medical department has its own area of expertise for measuring human performance that is accommodated in one of the four major pillars of the human performance lab: muscle and nerves, lungs, heart and vessels, brain and cognition. By working closely together, we offer an integrative way for studying human performance. This results in a lab that has outstanding, state-of-the art research techniques that can examine human performance in different settings (health and disease, (in)activity and lifestyle) and can evaluate new therapies and interventions at the organ and patient level.

Lungs

We have access to tests that measure lung size and air flow, as well as tests that measure how well gases such as oxygen get in and out of your blood. read more

Lungs

The lungs supply the body with oxygen and are thus vital organs for human performance. Pulmonary function tests measure how well your lungs work.

At the Human Performance Lab, we have access to tests that measure lung size and air flow, as well as tests that measure how well gases such as oxygen get in and out of your blood. Furthermore, we can non-invasively measure markers for airway inflammation.

We can also monitor pulmonary function and oxygen consumption in mobile settings, for example during activities in daily life. These tests can be applied to diagnose lung and airway diseases, monitor if a disease is stable or worsening, and examine effectiveness of interventions.

Selection of our techniques

  • Spirometry
  • Helium dilution
  • Body box
  • Single breath CO diffusion
  • Bronchial provocation
  • Metronome paced tachypnea

Heart and vessels

We have the tools to measure vessel quality and function and we can predict coronary artery disease risk non-invasively. read more

Heart and vessels

The heart and blood vessels are responsible for transporting oxygen, nutrients, hormones and cellular waste products throughout the body. At the Human Performance Lab, we have the tools to measure vessel quality and function and we can predict coronary artery disease risk non-invasively. So, if you want to monitor how healthy your blood vessels are, assess the effects of an intervention or therapy, we can help you.

Selection of our techniques

  • Transthoracic doppler echocardiography
  • Finger plethysmography
  • Flow-mediated dilation
  • Intima media wall thickness
  • Pulse wave velocity
  • Cold pressor test
  • Continuous blood pressure monitoring

Muscles and nerves

Muscles and nerves

Muscles are the motor of movement and an essential part of human performance. If you want to measure human muscle and nerve function in your trial, we can help.

At the Human Performance Lab, we have the expertise and technologies to measure muscle function. Our advanced technologies can be used to measure in-vivo muscle function from strength, relaxation and fatigue at single muscle level to integrated muscle performance, including balance and fall measurements.

In addition, we have vast experience with maximal and endurance exercise testing on a bike ergometer or treadmill. We have experience with measuring human muscle and nerve function in health and disease, athletes and aging.

Selection of our techniques

  • Biodex force chair
  • Gait analysis (including 3D kinematics, 3D kinetics and acceleration)
  • High density and multichannel electromyography
  • Magnetic and electrical stimulation
  • Muscle force recording
  • Radboud falls simulator
  • TMS-induced muscle relaxation
  • Muscle and nerve ultrasound
  • Electrical nerve stimulation
  • Maximal exercise performance (bicycle and walking test)
  • Endurance exercise performance (bicycle and walking test)

Brain and cognition

We have the expertise and technologies to investigate brain and cognitive function as well as techniques that can be used to measure blood flow and oxygenation in the brain. read more

Brain and cognition

The brain controls most functions of the body, for example our muscles, breathing activity and body temperature. Every creative thought, feeling and plan originates in our brain. So the brain is an exciting organ to study when it comes to human performance.

At the Human Performance Lab, we have the expertise and technologies to investigate brain and cognitive function. For example, measurement of electrical brain activity can be used to test sleep quality and repetitive magnetic brain stimulation can be used to modulate sensation of pain.

In addition, we have experience with techniques that can be used to measure blood flow and oxygenation in the brain. If you want to investigate brain and cognition, please contact us.

Selection of our techniques

  • Repetitive magnetic brain stimulation
  • 3D neuronavigationEEG and evoked potentials
  • Transcranial doppler
  • Cerebral oxygenation with NIRS
