Interventional pulmonology is a rapidly evolving field that requires specific skills and knowledge of the involved health care workers. It not only concerns clinical knowledge but also an increasing amount of technical expertise. Many new technologies have been developed in this field like high-end imaging, tools, therapeutic devices and treatment strategies. Interventional pulmonology has played an essential part in the evolution of thoracic oncology for both diagnosis and staging in the past years, and its role is becoming increasingly more important now we are moving towards the implementation of immediate treatments.

This is of particular importance given the rising incidence of lung cancer and implementation of lung cancer screening programs in Europe. Mastering all these skills and developing the scientific basis for appropriate and cost-effective use of technology requires specifically trained and dedicated staff.

In this symposium, renowned key-note speakers will present the current ‘state-of-the-art’ and discuss ongoing and future developments in the field of interventional pulmonology, training, screening and implementation of new technology into clinical practice. The symposium is closed with the inaugural lecture of Erik van der Heijden, appointed as professor of interventional pulmonology at Radboud University Medical Center and Radboud University.
