In the first nine months as scientific director ad interim of RIHS I have been impressed by the excellence and the large variety of research in the institute. With an academic staff of about 1700 professionals (575 fte) RIHS succeeded in bringing forward very strong research and societal impact in the field of health sciences.

The external review committee using the SEP protocol qualified both the research and the societal impact of the institute as very good to excellent. The committee considered the viability as very good. Many thanks to all RIHS researchers for contributing to these excellent qualifications. Three research themes were evaluated with the highest scores: Infectious Diseases and Global Health, Renal Disorders and Urological Cancers. Congratulations to all researchers who participate in these themes.
It is not possible to mention the successes of all our researchers in the last year. I will share a small selection with you. We had prestigious personal grants for RIHS researchers. Rutger Maas has been awarded with a Kolff junior postdoc grant. Ritse Mann received a Vidi grant. Teun Bousema and Ioannis Sechopoulos were awarded with ERC consolidator grants. There were also large research grants from the EU, NWO/ZonMW, KWF and other financers. Many scientific papers, in high impact factor journals and with high impact were published. 117 PhD theses were successfully defended, of which 4 cum laude for Machteld van Egmond, Rosa Geurtzen, Miriam Haaksma en Jan van Zelst. Two Christine Mohrmann stipendia were awarded for Esmee Bakker and Yonne Peters. More than 155 new Training and Supervision Plans were submitted. The PhD council started with intervision for PhD candidates and organized a visit to Philips Healthcare and a great retreat in Den Bosch. During the very successful Open Day in October we had more than 3000 visitors. 2019 has been a wonderful year for RIHS. And last but certainly not least, our former scientific director Bart Kiemeney cycled the Tour de France to acquire more money for cancer research.

In 2020 the RIHS is looking forward to the Frontiers congress on November 12 and 13. The main theme will be Prevention. Save the date! We hope to see many of you in our regular events for PhD students, postdocs and senior researchers.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas with your beloved ones and a great and successful personal and scientific year in 2020.
