RIHS PhD retreat a great success!

New to this year’s programme were two workshops aimed at personal development: a workshop on networking during which we learned how to present yourself and to pitch your research, and a personal leadership workshop, which was about exploring yourself in terms of what you want and what is important to you, provided by Janou Hemsing from Radboud in’to Languages and Annet van de Laak, respectively.
The organizing committee looks back at the Retreat with only good memories and we hope next year’s edition will be just as successful.
Last week, the annual RIHS PhD Retreat took place in Wageningen and it was a great success!
A record number of 63 PhD candidates registered to the Retreat and enjoyed a programme containing scientific, personal development as well as social elements. Special guest this year was Louise Gunning-Schepers, who was interviewed in a ‘College Tour’-like setting, resulting in a lively, interactive discussion on topics such as the role of prevention in public health, , the Dutch National Research Agenda, the value of a PhD in- and outside academia, the balance between work and private life and parenthood planning during your PhD and Louise also talked briefly about the occupation of the ‘Maagdenhuis’, during which she was president of the executive board of the University of Amsterdam. At the end, she also shared some tips with all PhD candidates, who were greatly inspired by her. Awards
On both days, PhD candidates had the opportunity to present their research either in a 4 slide short talk or in an oral presentation. Anouk Rombouts was awarded with the best oral presentation and Annemarie Post and Eva-Leonne Göttgens were awarded with the best 4-slide short talk.The organizing committee looks back at the Retreat with only good memories and we hope next year’s edition will be just as successful.
