About us

This department’s research is directed at the identification of new targets for cartilage destruction in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, understanding  the mechanisms of chronic inflammation and auto-immunity, and the development of advanced therapeutics.

The clinical research group has a strong reputation because of the research into the assessment and prognosis of rheumatoid arthritis and systemic sclerosis.

The Disease Activity Score was developed here, and is used worldwide for the assessment of inflammatory activity in rheumatoid arthritis.

Our research is directed at refinement of prognostic predictions, ‘tight control’ strategies for tailored treatment algorithms in rheumatoid arthritis, and understanding patient and physician decision making processes. Research for systemic sclerosis is directed at early diagnosis and treatment and early detection of major complications.
