Goals

  • To develop biomarkers to improve early diagnostics and prevention of disease. 
  • To implement Omics & data-driven approaches in clinical biomarker workflows. 
  • To integrate and increase knowledge among healthcare and scientific professionals about biomarker research, development and deployment. 
  • Eventually we hope to unite expertise across molecular biology, analytical and clinical chemistry, preclinical and clinical models, data integration, artificial intelligence (AI), health economics and ethics to identify and develop biomarkers for personalized diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, therapeutic prediction and monitoring. 
  • Eventually we hope to reduce research waste and to accelerate the translation of new discoveries into clinically impactful biomarkers, improving healthcare outcomes and precision medicine.

Research groups contributing to this research program

Bioinformatics

Peter-Bram 't Hoen's research group develops computational workflows for the integration of omics and clinical data to predict disease progression and identify drug repurposing candidates in myotonic dystrophy and other neuromuscular disorders. 

Genetic epidemiology

Sita Vermeulen's research group aims to understand underlying mechanisms of prognosis and treatment response in order to facilitate personalized medicine. The group mainly uses molecular epidemiological studies and has a focus on bladder cancer.

Glycosylation disorders in neurology

Dirk Lefeber's research group performs translational research on the metabolism of sugars and protein glycosylation in human genetic diseases affecting muscle and brain.
