  • To develop new challenge models (e.g. P. vivax, B. pertussis), improve methodology (study designs, simulation and mathematical modeling, biomarker development) and validate challenge models with real world data. 
  • To use existing synergies to identify and close gaps in human capacity and infrastructure to further increase international visibility and to apply for external funding. 
  • To establish and assess the program's governance models.

Experimental internal medicine

Mihai Netea's research group investigates the regulation of innate immune responses in health and disease, and based on that it designs and tests new approaches of immunotherapy in infections and immune-mediated diseases.

Experimental medical parasitology

Benjamin Mordmüller's research group discusses, develops and uses human challenge models to investigate infection, pathophysiology and transmission of infectious agents with the aim to improve medical interventions.

Infection and immunity

Marien de Jonge's research group conducts research on mucosal immunity in the respiratory tract and aims to unravel host-pathogen interactions to improve diagnosis and protection against airway infections.
