Research Integrity Round #19 – 13 March 2024 Artificial Intelligence and Research Integrity: a good marriage?

The Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity divides research in phases (Design, Conduct, Reporting Results, Assessment and Peer review, and Communication) and explains how the five basis principles (i.e., honesty, transparency, scrupulousness, independence, and responsibility) should be taken into consideration in each phase. We will especially explore the promises and pitfalls of AI use for two phases: “Conduct” and “Reporting Results”. Taking the principle of responsibility seriously, we will also discuss the impact of our AI use on society and our climate.

We will welcome five guests, and will have pitches, polls, and panel conversations to engage everybody. Members of the public can ask questions as well. Our host will be Dr. Jos Kole. 

Guests 

• Dr. Michiel Schinkel is ANIOS Internal medicine and researcher at St. Antonius Hospital and Amsterdam UMC. Michiel will inform us what is now technically possible in terms of generative AI. Which AI instruments are available to support scientists in their research? 
• Two guests will show how AI can play a role in the ‘Conduct-phase’ of research: 
  * Dr. Guido de Jong is Technical Physician at the 3D Lab of Radboudumc. Guido will illustrate how he uses AI in his research practices, and reflect on its advantages and disadvantages. 
  * Luc Builtjes is a PhD candidate at the Diagnostic Image Analysis Group (DIAG) at Radboudumc. He will present how he employs AI himself to develop new AI applications for clinical practice. 
• Prof. Joost Wiersinga is chair of the Division of Infectious Diseases of Amsterdam UMC and the University of Amsterdam. He will show how AI can be used in the Reporting Results phase and to which questions about research integrity this may lead. 
• Dr. Bernard van Gastel is an assistant professor Sustainable Digitalization working at the computing science institute of Radboud University. Bernard will inform us about the impact of our use of AI and digital data on our ecological footprint.

Research Integrity Round #18 - 13 December 2023 Research ethical issues in the physician/researcher/ patient/participant quadrangle

Apart from being research participant, patients may take part in the design, financing, coordination, evaluation and assessment of research. Physicians may be able to explain better to their patients why they should participate in a trial. Yet, seeking their consent, they may also thwart their voluntariness to participate. Both physicians and patients run the risk of so-called therapeutical misconception. Participation of patient federations may stimulate patient relevant research, but a strong patient lobby might also put pressure on researchers.  

This RIR is organised in close collaboration with the regional Medical Ethics Review Committee (MERC Oost-Nederland). This committee assesses (bio)medical research proposals. It is regularly confronted with issues related to this research ethical issues in the quadrangle. During the RIR, members of the committee will join the conversation with our guests. They will share their experiences with and insights about the ambivalent roles of physicians and patients in research. 

We will explore this theme with four guests, and use pitches, polls, and panel conversations to engage everybody. Of course, members of the public can ask questions as well. Our host will be dr. Jos Kole. 

Guests 

Dr. Jeroen Janssen is hematologist at the Department of Hematology of Radboudumc. He regularly combines the roles of researcher and physician.   
Dr. Bart van de Warrenburg is neurologist at the Radboudumc with an interest for the genetic background of neurological movement disorders. He closely collaborates with patients in research.   
Klaartje Spijkers (MSc), senior advisor of the Netherlands Patients Federation, will shed light on the diverse roles that patients can play in research.  
Prof.dr. Gerard Rongen, is chair of the Medical Ethical Review Committee East-Netherlands, and Professor in Translational Cardiovascular Research at Radboudumc.
