Invited speaker Prof. dr. Tom Lüdde

Prof. dr. Tom Lüdde is working at the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Infectious Diseases  at the University Hospital Düsseldorf (Germany). After studying in Hanover, where he also obtained his PhD in molecular medicine, he continued with research in this field and obtained a post-doc at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Monterotondo, Italy, and the Institute of Genetics in Cologne.

Currently, he is conducting research in both molecular and clinical aspects of liver disease and GI cancers. For example, as a project leader of DEEP LIVER he and his team are using artificial intelligence on histological images from liver biopsies and clinical data to develop a tool that will improve individual risk prediction and accelerate the diagnosis of rare diseases. Another of his teams research goals is to understand, which pathogenic stimuli are activating apoptosis or necroptosis in the liver and how these distinct forms of cell death regulate inflammatory responses and regeneration. This in order to understand the mechanism on fibrosis (activation of hepatic stellate cells) and cancer development. In line with this research objective Prof. dr. Lüdde will give us a guest lecture on ‘Role of Programmed Cell Death in GI Carcinogenesis’.
