Nearly twenty percent of the Dutch population suffers from chronic pain. The costs for society are higher than those of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes together. Together with television program ‘de Kennis van Nu’ and The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), Radboudumc researchers launched the National Research Project on pain (‘Groot Nationaal Onderzoek Pijn’). An online study on pain sensitivity in the Dutch population was performed. Over 9000 people responded. The results showed that women are more sensitive to pain than men and that their pain sensitivity can be reduced by watching a painful movie. They also found that people who experience pain, but perform sports on a regular basis have a lower pain sensitivity than those who do not perform sports.
