Orthopaedic Surgery: Imaging and reality
In the ERC Advanced Grant ´BioMechTools´ project van Verdonschot focuses on generating computer models that simulate functional aspects of bones and the musculoskeletal system of bones. One important project is predicting femoral bone strength in metastasized cancer patients. Using CT and engineering modeling approaches we predict which patient is likely to sustain a spontaneous fracture. Hence, we identify patients who require prophylactic bone-strengthening surgery using our computer simulation techniques. With our developed technology we have, therefore, a significant impact on the healthcare for these vulnerable patients. We will thrive towards clinical application of biomechanical tools for the prediction of fracture risk in metastatic bone disease.
