Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic research technician to strengthen the Nuclear Medicine research group. You will be working on various preclinical projects. In our research group we develop novel tracers to image various diseases (e.g. cancer, diabetes, neurological disorders) using PET, SPECT, and fluorescence imaging. These tracers are also used to study disease processes and to treat diseases, for example through targeted radionuclide or photodynamic therapy aimed at selectively destroying tumor cells. Are you our new colleague?

In our research group, we work across the entire pipeline of radiotracer development, starting from the design and production of new tracers, in vitro characterization and investigating their mechanism-of-action (radiobiology/photobiology), to in vivo characterization (laboratory animal studies), and translation into clinical use. Furthermore, we are involved in many teaching activities at the Radboudumc, Radboud University, and beyond.

The responsibilities of the research technician will include:

  • Radiolabeling and fluorescent labeling of various compounds, including antibodies, peptides, and small molecules.
  • Quality control of tracers using techniques such as ITLC, HPLC, FPLC, and spectrophotometry.
  • Cell culture and in vitro characterization of these radio- or fluorescently labeled compounds using cell assays (e.g. binding assays, clonogenic assays, ELISA).
  • In vivo characterization of radio- or fluorescently labeled compounds in animal models, including techniques such as dissection, PET, SPECT, MRI, CT, and fluorescence imaging. Immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry.
  • Teaching and supporting bachelor and master students in their internship.
You will work in a team of research technicians and after you are familiarized with our lab you will carry out experiments independently or in collaboration with other research technicians, PhD students, or postdoctoral researchers, under the supervision of a principle investigator.

Depending on your level of experience and expertise, you will be involved in the design, execution, and interpretation of your experiments. You will report your research findings efficiently and accurately both in writing, in your lab journal, and during project team meetings.

Place of work

The Department of Medical Imaging provides academic patient care, research, and education. Imaging plays a vital role in the diagnosis of many diseases and conditions. To this end, the department uses CT, ultrasound, MRI, PET, and SPECT. In addition to diagnostic procedures, the department also performs treatments, such as angiographic interventions or therapies using radiopharmaceuticals, for example for thyroid, prostate, or liver tumors.

The department includes five research groups, one of which is Nuclear Medicine. The Nuclear Medicine research group consists of a multidisciplinary team, including research technicians, (molecular) biologists, biomedical scientists, technical physicians, (radio)chemists, and physicians. They work closely together to develop new tracers and therapies. The group is involved in numerous national and international projects and collaborations. Translating fundamental research into clinical practice is a key component of our work.

The department is equipped with state-of-the-art radionuclide laboratories and preclinical imaging equipment. The in vivo experiments are carried out at the Preclinical Imaging Center (PRIME). The department works closely with the cyclotron facility (RTM) and also houses a GMP-certified radiopharmacy, enabling rapid clinical translation of tracers developed in preclinical research, in close collaboration with the hospital pharmacy.

You will join a social, supportive, close-knit team, where collaboration is key, where team science matters more than individual wins, and where we make sure your talents are put to good use.
